What to Expect During a New Garage Door Installation
Getting a new garage door installed? Here is a step-by-step look at what the process involves, how long it takes, and how to prepare your garage beforehand.
A new garage door is one of the highest-ROI home improvements you can make — it improves curb appeal, energy efficiency, and security all at once. But if you have never had one installed before, the process can feel like a black box. What exactly happens? How long does it take? What do you need to do to prepare?
Here is a complete walkthrough of what to expect when Speedy Check Garage Doors installs your new door.
Before the Installation Day
Measure and order. Before anything else, we measure your opening precisely — width, height, headroom (space above the opening), side room (space on each side), and backroom (depth of the garage). These measurements determine which door sizes and track configurations will work for your space.
Choose your door. We help you select the right door for your home — material, style, insulation level, and color. If you want to see samples in person, we can bring them to your home. Lead times vary by manufacturer and style; standard in-stock doors can often be installed within a few days, while custom orders may take two to four weeks.
Confirm the opener situation. If you are keeping your existing opener, we verify it is compatible with the new door's weight and size. If you are replacing the opener at the same time, we coordinate both installations for the same visit.
Day of Installation: What Happens
A standard single-car door installation takes approximately three to four hours. A double-car door or a job that includes opener replacement may take four to six hours. Here is the sequence:
1. Removal of the Old Door
We start by disconnecting the opener and removing the old door panels, starting from the top section and working down. We also remove the old tracks, springs, cables, and hardware. Everything is disassembled and set aside for disposal — we haul it away as part of the job.
2. Track Installation
New vertical and horizontal tracks are installed and secured to the wall and ceiling framing. Track alignment is critical — even a small deviation can cause the door to bind or come off track over time. We use a level throughout this process.
3. Spring and Hardware Installation
The torsion spring shaft, drums, and cables are installed above the opening. For extension spring systems, the springs and pulleys are mounted along the horizontal tracks. This is the most technically demanding part of the installation — spring tension must be precisely calibrated for the door's weight.
4. Door Panel Installation
Door panels are installed from the bottom up, with hinges connecting each section. Rollers are inserted into the track as each panel goes up. The top section receives the top fixtures that connect to the lift cables.
5. Opener Installation (if applicable)
If a new opener is being installed, the rail is assembled and mounted to the header above the door. The motor unit is hung from the ceiling, the drive mechanism is connected to the door, and the safety sensors are mounted and aligned at the base of each track.
6. Tension Adjustment and Balancing
Once everything is assembled, we wind the torsion spring to the correct tension for your door's weight. We then test the balance by disconnecting the opener and lifting the door manually to waist height — a properly balanced door should stay in place.
7. Opener Programming and Testing
We program all remotes, keypads, and the wall button. If the opener has Wi-Fi connectivity (myQ), we walk you through the app setup. We run the door through multiple full cycles, verify the auto-reverse safety feature is working, and make any final adjustments.
8. Cleanup and Walkthrough
We remove all packaging, old hardware, and debris. Before we leave, we walk you through the new door and opener — how to use the manual release, how to adjust the travel limits if needed, and what regular maintenance looks like.
How to Prepare Your Garage
A few things you can do before installation day to make the process smoother:
- Clear the area around the door. We need about 10 feet of clear space in front of the door and access to the ceiling above the opening.
- Move vehicles out of the garage. The door will be inoperable for several hours during installation.
- Locate your electrical outlet. Openers require a standard 120V outlet near the ceiling above the door. If you do not have one, we can coordinate with an electrician.
- Note any access issues. If your garage has low headroom, unusual ceiling obstructions, or other non-standard conditions, let us know in advance so we can bring the right hardware.
After Installation
Your new door requires minimal break-in maintenance. We recommend:
- Lubricate the springs, hinges, and rollers once a year with a dedicated garage door lubricant (not WD-40)
- Test the auto-reverse feature twice a year by placing a 2x4 in the door's path
- Check the balance annually by disconnecting the opener and lifting the door manually
A well-maintained door will give you years of reliable service. Most of our customers go a decade or more without needing anything beyond routine lubrication.
